In the first Test of Ashes 2023, Australia beat England by 2 wickets at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham. Australian skipper Pat Cummins, along with spinner Nathan Lyon, added unbeaten 55 runs for the ninth wicket to clinch the game for Australia. Cummins’ unbeaten knock of 44 runs off 73 balls helped Australia to win one of the most thrilling encounters in the last few years.

Earlier, Australia started their chase in the second session of Day 5 as the first session was washed out due to heavy rainfall. However, visitors started well before Stuart Broad dismissed Scott Boland. Boland, in his innings, scored 20 runs off 40 balls with the help of two boundaries. After his departure, Mooen Ali also removed Travis Head for cheap as he scored just 16 runs off 24 balls with the help of three boundaries.

Meanwhile, allrounder Cameron Green, along with opener Usman Khawaja, added 49 runs for the sixth wicket. Green, in his innings, scored 28 runs off 66 balls with the help of two boundaries. He was dismissed by Ollie Robinson. Meanwhile, Khawaja, in his innings, scored 65 runs off 197 balls before Ben Stokes removed him. Coming into the third and final session of the game England looked comfortable to win the game as they needed just 2 wickets.

Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon scripted a historic victory

However, Australia skipper Pat Cummins had other plans as he batted through the end and took Aussies to the glory. Cummins, along with Lyon, added 55 runs for the ninth wicket and helped Australia to script one of the greatest chases in Ashes history. Lyon supported his skipper well as he scored 16 runs off 28 balls with the help of two boundaries.

After losing the game, England skipper Ben Stokes faced criticism for declaring on the very first day of the game. However, he justified his decision and said, “A loss is a loss, we said we are going to keep playing this way. This is the way we will continue playing, going hard at Australia, taking certain decisions that feel right. (On declaration regrets) Not at all, I saw it as a chance to pounce on Australia. Never easy for someone to go out and bat for 20 minutes. Who knows? Maybe Root and Jimmy could have got out and we would have been in the same place.”
