‘We’ve been wiped out 0-4 in past but…’ – Sunil Gavaskar takes a dig at MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma’s captaincy
Team India has been quite successful in the longest format of the game over the last five years or so. They have several home and overseas series during this period, breaking a few records along the way. However, they lost two consecutive World Test Championships (WTC) finals against New Zealand and Australia. Men in Blue have struggled to win these trophies under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has questioned the accountability of captains and coaches of the team. While talking to the media, Gavaskar talked about the security modern Indian captains enjoy. He also criticized them by saying that they were allowed to continue on without any questions asked.
It would have been even more difficult if you were to play Australia in a must-win last match: Sunil Gavaskar
“Whether you win or lose, the captain knows that he is going to be there. This has not been a recent case, mind you. This has been happening since 2011. There have been results where we have been wiped out in the series 0-4, 0-4 but the captain hasn’t changed,” said the former India captain.
Gavaskar also made an interesting observation on India’s World Cup schedule and their opening game against Australia which will be very important for Men in Blue. Both the teams are favorites to win the championship so it will be an interesting contest for the fans.
“Absolutely. It would have been even more difficult if you were to play Australia in a must-win last match. I feel it is always an advantage to play against the good teams first. If you don’t get a good result, you have chances later. If you probably play against some weak team later, you will know what you need to do against them and with what margin you need to win,” Gavaskar said.
