ODI World Cup 2023: No fireworks in Mumbai and Delhi owing to poor air quality in cities
Team India is all set to lock horns against Sri Lanka on November 2 at the iconic Wankhede Cricket Stadium in Mumbai for their seventh game of the ODI World Cup 2023. However, the Men in Blue place themselves in the top spot, as they are the only team that has been undefeated in the tournament so far and has defeated all six teams that they have played with so far.
However, Indian Cricket Board Secretary Jay Shah revealed that there will be no fireworks during India’s next clash in Mumbai owing to high pollution in the city. The 35-year-old cricket administrator took the matter to the Apex Cricket Council and obtained permission to prevent crackers in Mumbai City from contributing to the environment.
“BCCI is sensitive to environmental concerns. I took up the matter formally with the ICC and there won’t be any fireworks display in Mumbai, which can add to the pollution level. The Board is committed to combating environmental issues and will always place the interest of our fans and stakeholders at the forefront,” Jay Shah was quoted as saying by ANI.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to prioritizing the health: Jay Shah
Notably, there is very much pollution in Delhi and Mumbai, and the Indian Cricket Board is committed to avoiding crackers in both cities. Jay Shah said that for them, health is the priority, owing to which they had taken the crucial step. However, there will be a fireworks display during India vs. South Africa clash, slated to take place on November 5 at Eden Garden in Kolkata. In addition, the day also marks the birthday of India’s batting master, Virat Kohli.
“The BCCI acknowledges the urgent concern surrounding air quality in both Mumbai and New Delhi. While we strive to host the ICC World Cup in a manner befitting the celebration of cricket, we remain steadfast in our commitment to prioritizing the health and safety of all our stakeholders,” he further said.
