‘Everybody says MS Dhoni is best captain but Rohit Sharma is…’ – Ravichandran Ashwin’s telling remark on India’s skipper
India star cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, who played his last game during India’s opening ODI World Cup 2023 clash against Australia on October 8 in Chennai, has opened up about the captaincy skills of India’s skipper, Rohit Sharma. Notably, India’s captain Rohit Sharma is unsuccessful in bringing the major titles for the country, and MS Dhoni is the last captain who helped India secure a win back in 2013.
Speaking about the comparison, Ravichandran Ashwin accepted that everyone feels MS Dhoni was the most successful captain; however, he feels Rohit Sharma is an outstanding person, regardless of the win or the loss in the match. The great spinner reveals that the 36-year-old skipper knows very well the strengths of each player, including their likes and dislikes, which makes him such an exceptional and great leader.
Ravichandran Ashwin also opens up about not getting a place in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 despite having good figures against Australia. Notably, the middle-order batter reveals that it was Rohit Sharma’s great captaincy and skills that made him push for more pacers as compared to spinners in the final clash.
Rohit Sharma knows the likes and dislikes of each of us and has a great understanding: Ravichandran Ashwin
“If you take a look at Indian cricket, everybody will be telling you that MS Dhoni is the best captain. (But), Rohit Sharma is an outstanding person, (and) he understands every single player in the team. He knows the likes and dislikes of each of us and has a great understanding. He puts in the effort to know each player personally,” Ravichandran Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel.
“As far as I playing the final is concerned, the team combination and all is secondary. Firstly, it’s about empathy, (and) I keep stressing it a lot. It’s like standing in someone else’s shoes and looking at things from his/her perspective. Had I been in Rohit’s shoes, I would have thought 100 times about altering the (winning) combination, so why rest a fast bowler for three spinners?,” he added further.
