‘Ajeeb hai ye’ – Fans react as Jay Shah claims assurance on Rohit Sharma’s place in T20 WC 2024 squad could not be granted

Indian Cricket Board chief secretory Jay Shah spoke about a lot of developments in Indian cricket in recent times during his latest press conference. He spoke about some key factors like the decision on Rahul Dravid’s tenure extension as the Indian coach till the T20 WC 2024, the leadership in the T20 World Cup 2024 for India, the hosting of the WPL, and the future of senior players in the T20I side.

Shah said that the future of Indian coaching would be discussed with Dravid after the conclusion of India’s tour of South Africa. The secretary of the Indian Cricket Board further answered the questions on the inclusion of senior players back in the Indian side. He also spoke about the issue of naming the captain for the T20 World Cup 2024.

When asked about the captain of India for the T20 World Cup 2024, Shah said that there is a lot of time to reveal who would lead India. Jay added that the clarity on the same cannot be given at this stage. “What is the need to have clarity right now? It (T20 World Cup) is starting in June; we have the IPL before that and the series against Afghanistan,” said Shah about captaincy.

WPL 2024 to happen in a single state

Shah revealed that the second edition of the WPL would happen in a single state. Jay said that all the matches of the WPL 2024 would be played in Pune and Mumbai. Pune has one stadium, MCA stadium, and Mumbai has three stadiums – Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, and D Y Patil Stadium. Jay later stated that the spot of any players in the T20 WC 2024 is not confirmed.

The likes of Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Mohammed Shami last played a T20I match before the T20 World Cup 2022. Bumrah and Jadeja did not even play in the tournament. The decision on such players is likely to be taken after the conclusion of the IPL 2024. Likewise, the decision on the inclusion of other players is also likely to happen after the conclusion of IPL 2024.
