‘Set limit on the money on an overseas player….’ – Anil Kumble makes audacious claim on signings of Mitchell Starc & Pat Cummins at IPL 2024 auction
Former India cricketer Anil Kumble has been totally perplexed after Australia’s stars Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, who were sold for a substantial amount in the IPL 2024 mini-auction, which took place on December 19 in Dubai. Notably, KKR has picked up Mitchell Starc for 24.75 crores, and SRH has brought Pat Cummins for 20.5 crores in the mini-auction.
The well-renowned cricket commentator feels that such an overprized amount should be for the Indian players over an overseas. In addition, the former leg spinner gives example of Jasprit Bumrah while saying that he cannot enjoy such perks as he was retained by MI ahead of the auction. Moreover, the 53-year-old cricketer feels Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah weren’t happy after glancing at such a mega-priced auction.
“I mean, there is Jasprit Bumrah, right? He is the best all-format bowler in the world but just because he is already with a franchise, he cannot enjoy the perks on being part of an auction process. And someone like Starc, who hasn’t had the greatest form in T20Is, is earning a fortune. I can only imagine that someone like Virat Kohli or Bumrah must be watching this and thinking what is going on,” Anil Kumble said on Jio Cinema.
I’m happy for the teams but I really feel that every franchise needs to set a limit on the money: Anil Kumble
Anil Kumble was happy for the team, but he feels that the team needs to set a limit on the overseas players. Moreover, the legendary cricketer acknowledged that Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are quality players, but he expressed his displeasure with getting sold for such a massive amount despite their normal records in T20Is.
“I’m happy for the teams but I really feel that every franchise needs to set a limit on the money they will spend on an overseas player, or the bracket of foreigners. ₹20 crore is a mad amount. I know that these are quality players but Mitchell Starc being offered almost ₹25 crore is pretty surprising to say the least,” he added further.
