‘Afghanistan toh gaya’ – Fans feel sad for Afghanistan as India names near full strength squad to face them in T20Is

India has named its T20I squad for the series against Afghanistan. The return of the senior batters like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has highlighted the announcement. In the absence of Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit is also set to lead the Indian team. For the first time in 14 months, the two players will be taking part in a T20I match.

In the game against England in the semifinal of the 2022 T20 World Cup, Rohit and Virat had last played their T20I match. The return of the two has pleased the fans. Along with them, many other players have different roles to fulfil. The Indian bowling does not have any surprising picks. The players that played against Australia and SA will continue against Afghanistan as well.

In the spin-bowling department, India has the likes of Ravi Bishnoi and Kuldeep Yadav. Both are different but can turn the either way. While Bishnoi is a traditional leg-spinner, Kuldeep is an unorthodox chinaman wrist-spinner. The pace bowling will feature three pace bowlers Mukesh Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, and Avesh Khan. The three pacers were in the series against South Africa as well.

Young batters get picked in the squad

In the All-rounders department, India has backed two spin-bowling All-Rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar. Both of them can finish the innings down the order and do the job of spin-bowling in the PP and the middle-overs phases. With the bat, India has got some good options. Most of them are youngsters who are in contention to take part in the T20 WC 2024 later this year in the WI and the USA.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill are in the squad as the options for opening the innings with Rohit. In the middle order, India has the likes of Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, and Tilak Varma. Along with Jaiswal, these three can bowl as well, which is a bonus. India has wicketkeepers like Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma who can bat in the middle order.

India’s squad for the series against Afghanistan: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Shivam Dube, Sanju Samson (WK), Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Avesh Khan, and Mukesh Kumar
