‘Test cricket at its best’ – Fans react as England hold nerves to emerge victorious by 28 runs in 1st Test against India
Out of everyone’s expectations, be it the cricket fans, former cricketers or the experts of the game, the hosts India faced a defeat by 28 runs against England in the first Test of the five-match series. the match was played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad from January 25 to 28.
The visiting skipper Ben Stokes opted to bat first after winning the toss in the series opener against India. Indian bowling attack managed to bundle out England just at the score of 246 runs in the first innings courtesy of brilliant bowling from spinners and the star pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah as well;
Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja scalped 3 wickets each, including two wickets each bagged by star pacer Jasprit Bumrah and spin-allrounder Axar Patel.
Responding to England’s first innings, India aggregated 436 runs in their first innings and ended up with a 190-run lead at the end of the first innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul scored 80 and 86 runs, respectively followed by a brilliant 87-run knock played by star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
India couldn’t hold nerves in the fourth-innings run chase
Former England skipper Joe Root shone with the ball for his side and scalped 4 wickets in the first innings. Besides Root, debutant Tom Hartley and his spin partner Rehan Ahmed claimed two wickets each, alongside one wicket bagged by Jack Leach.
Coming up with a trail of 190 runs in the second innings, Ben Stokes’ men made a strong comeback and scored 420 runs in the second innings to set a 231-run target for the opponent. Star number 3 batter Ollie Pope registered a remarkable knock of 196 runs, with 21 fours with the bat.
While chasing the target, India failed to go over the line and England bundled out the hosts at the score of 202 runs in 69.2 overs courtesy of a brilliant 7-wicket haul claimed by Tom Hartley.
Eventually, England prevailed by 28 runs to take a step ahead on a positive note in the five-match series against Rohit Sharma’s men.
