Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah reappointed as Asian Cricket Council chairman for third successive year
The Asian Cricket Council appointed Jay Shah as the President of the body for the third straight time on Wednesday. Notably, Jay Shah took the charge back in 2021 for the president role. However, the cricket administrator is currently holding the position of Indian Cricket Board Secretary as well. According to sources, Jay Shah may end his ACC tenure ahead of November as he aims to assume the role of Apex Cricket Council Chairman.
Jay Shah’s extension decision of the Asian Cricket Council was taken by the Sri Lankan Cricket President, and the decision has been backed by other staff of the ACC as well. Notably, Jay Shah has indeed been the right choice for the post; however, he was the centre of criticism during the Asia Cup 2023 when he denied travelling to Pakistan for the marquee event, and a plethora of fans slammed him for keeping the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka despite the rainy season.
Later, Jay Shah defended his decision, whereas Rohit Sharma and Co. emerged as the winners of the event.
“Jay Shah’s extension was proposed by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president Shammi Silva for the second time and the nomination was unanimously backed by all the members of the ACC. I am grateful to the ACC Board for their continued trust. We must remain committed to ensuring the all-round development of the sport with a special focus on regions where it is still in its infancy. The ACC is committed to nurturing cricket across Asia,” quoted the press release from ACC.
Jay Shah’s tenure has seen the ACC actively promoting cricket in various regions: Report
Moreover, the statement further states that Jay Shah helped small countries become cricketing nations by providing suitable opportunities and making them part of the Asia Cup.
“Shah’s tenure has seen the ACC actively promoting cricket in various regions across the continent. Emerging cricketing nations such as Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Nepal, Thailand, Hong Kong, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and others, have displayed increasing interest, highlighting the ACC’s commitment to expanding the cricketing landscape. I credit him for this major transformation, which will further fuel the growth of the game in the region,” the press release quoted.
