Virat Kohli speaks up on possibility of scoring 100 hundreds in international cricket
After his unbeaten 166 helped India defeat Sri Lanka by 317 runs and set the record for the largest victory margin in a one-day international, Virat Kohli claimed on Sunday that he is not truly thirsty for milestones. Shubman Gill‘s 116 and Kohli’s third century in his last four games propelled India to a 390-5 victory in Thiruvananthapuram.
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj then contributed with a remarkable spell of 4-32, helping India bowl out the foreigners for a pitiful 73 in 22 overs and win the three-match series 3-0. India also pipped New Zealand’s 2008 win-margin record of 290 runs against Ireland.
After India decided to bat first, a stand of 131 runs between Gill and Kohli stood out. Kohli passed Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene’s 12,650 ODI runs to enter the top five all-time run scorers.
I want to continue being in this space where I am relaxed: Virat Kohli
“It (the awards) is the by-product of the intent I have. Mindset is always to help the team as much as I can, bat for as long as possible, and put the team in a strong position. I have always played for the right reasons, help the team as much as possible,” Kohli after being awarded the Man of the Series.
Since emerging from an extended lean spell last year, when he spoke about his mental issues throughout the period, the former captain Kohli has been in sensational form. “Ever since I came back from the break, I am feeling good and I don’t have desperation anymore to get to a milestone,” the Bangalore franchise player said.
“I want to continue being in this space where I am relaxed and content with how I am playing, and that for me is the most important thing. Today I was happy to be batting out there, and in that space, I end up playing my best cricket,” Kohli added.
Sachin Tendulkar (18,426), Kumar Sangakkara (14,234), Ricky Ponting (13,704), and Sanath Jayasuriya have amassed more runs than Kohli (12,754 in 268 ODI games for India) (13,430).
