‘Itne bhi mil jaye zada hai’ – Fans react as Smriti Mandhana is set to earn more than Babar Azam in Women’s T20 League

Star India opener Smriti Mandhana became the first and costliest purchase at the Women’s T20 League auction which took place in Mumbai on Monday, February 13. The Bangalore franchise opener was purchased for Rs. 3.4 crore. She has performed exceedingly well in the last few years.

Mandhana is set to earn Rs. 3.4 crores in the new season of the Women’s T20 League matches which is more than Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, who gets less than Mandhana’s price in the Pakistan super league for Peshawar Zalmi.

PSL has a draft system, under which, platinum players such as Babar Azam are paid around Rs. 1.4 crores. On the other hand, if we look at the Women’s T20 League, the 26-year-old almost earns double the salary of Babar. Mandhana was the first player to be sold in the Womens T20 League 2023 auction. The Mumbai franchise in the Bangalore franchise did a bidding war for her but, in the end, the Bangalore-based franchise grabbed the opener.

Smriti Mandhana has got plenty of captaincy experience and is familiar with the Indian conditions: Mike Hesson

“Everyone knows Mandhana and Ellyse Perry, we were pretty committed to the couple of people we wanted to get. We’re very happy to get such quality players. It’s a dream result for us to get Mandhana, Perry, and Sophie Devine. Smriti has got plenty of captaincy experience and is familiar with the Indian conditions, so highly likely [she’ll be captain],” the Bangalore franchise director of cricket Mike Hesson said.

The other Indian cricketers who went for higher values were all-rounder Deepti Sharma, who went to the UP franchise for Rs. 2.6 Crores. Jemimah Rodrigues went to the Delhi franchise for 2.2 crores. The Delhi-based franchise also bought India Under-19 skipper Shafali Verma for a price of Rs. 2 Crores.

India’s wicketkeeper-batter, Richa Ghosh was taken by the Bangalore franchise for a price of Rs. 1.9 Crores. The Mumbai franchise grabbed the deal for the star India all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar for the same price that of Ghosh. Women in blue slippers were picked by the Mumbai franchise for a total of Rs. 1.8 Crores.
