The Rohit Sharma-led team was bundled-out for 109 on Day 1 of the third Test against Australia in Indore, leaving the Indian crowd unhappy. Team India decided to bat first, and they got off to a strong start with a 27-run partnership between skipper Rohit and Shubman Gill. The visitors attacked with spin, though, as India lost five wickets for 18 runs.
Rohit was dismissed first, then Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Ravindra Jadeja, which marked the beginning of the end. In the first innings, the best bowlers were the spin combo of Matthew Kuhnemann and Nathan Lyon, who took five and three wickets each. But, when Jadeja was dismissed, everyone was shocked.
The star all-rounder failed to make an impact with the bat despite moving up the batting order, as Nathan Lyon dismissed him for only four runs. Lyon struck Jadeja in the pads during the eleventh over, and the on-field umpire signalled out the appeal for LBW.
Jadeja requested a DRS, but the ultra-edge revealed a spike because the ball had already touched the bat and the all-rounder was able to fend off the appeal. The Indian camp breathed a sigh of relief at the decision, but their joy was fleeting as Jadeja took a shot on the very next delivery that went right into Kuhnemann’s hands, forcing him to leave.

Kohli, who was positioned at the non-striker’s end, was seen looking disappointed as Jadeja made his way back to the dugout. Then the camera turned to Rohit, who was still sitting in the dugout and looking worried. On the first day of the third Test on Wednesday in Indore, Australia’s spinner Matthew Kuhnemann claimed five wickets and Nathan Lyon three to dismiss India for 109.
In the sixth over, after India won the toss and decided to bat in the four-match series, Australia introduced spin in an effort to recover from two devastating losses.
India made two adjustments to the squad that triumphed in Delhi, substituting Gill for Rahul and Mohammed Shami for the rested fast bowler Yadav. In the absence of Pat Cummins, Australia, under Smith, also made two adjustments. David Warner, who was unable to play in the final two games after suffering a fractured elbow and concussion in the second Test in Delhi, was replaced by Starc and Cameron Green, respectively.
