Ab maja aayega na bidhu’ – Fans react as Netflix is set to realase a new documentary on cricket match-fixing

On Thursday, March 9, Netflix released the trailer of their upcoming documentary on match-fixing named “Caught Out”. The goal of this feature-length documentary is to “lift the lid off the biggest match-fixing scandal” that has shaken the world of international cricket. To play for India has been every Indian boy’s biggest goal in the 1990s, but as the match-fixing scandal is enjoyed by that individual, then that dream quickly turns into a nightmare.

“Sport is meant to be unscripted. If it is scripted, it takes away everything that sport stands for,” a commentator says in the trailer. The journalist in the teaser goes on to say that he never imagined he would be “breaking the lid of anything” when he first started covering sports.

The video then switches to news story images with the caption, “The Sports Minister has authorized a CBI inquiry into the match-fixing controversy”. After that, as all masks come off, the scandal is shown to be getting bigger and bolder.

Indian legends involved in match-fixing

The documentary, which was produced and directed by Supriya Sobti Gupta, will be available on Netflix from March 17. The official summary claims that the film is a “pulsating story that looks at the trajectory of cricket in India, brimming with unexpected twists and turns whilst exploring how the cricketing fraternity fought back from one of the biggest corruption scandals.”

Cricket has long struggled with issues like match-fixing and betting. The popularity of the sport constantly offers bookies unique options to make money, particularly in a nation like India. But it is disappointing to watch sportsmen put their passion for the game second and fall to such gamblers out of mere selfishness.

The number of young cricketers who have abandoned their promising careers in order to make quick money is shocking when we consider the history of Indian cricket. Despite how impossible it may seem, even seasoned and older cricket players are not completely immune to these temptations.

The cricketers who have come under match-fixing scandal are Mohammad Azharuddin, S. Sreesanth, Manoj Prabhakar, Ajay Sharma, Amit Singh, Siddharth Trivedi, TP Sudhindra, Ankeet Chavan, Mohnish Mishra and Shalabh Srivastava.
