‘Maar-Maar ke Keema bana diya’ – Fans react as Usman Khawaja scores mammoth hundred against India in 4th Test
India locked horns against Australia in the fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Thursday, March 9. The visitors, once again, won the toss and elected to bat first. The Aussies made no changes in their squad, while the hosts brought in Mohammad Shami in place of Mohammad Siraj, who has not performed that well in this series.
Before the first day of the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Ahmedabad, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the players and sang the national anthems along with them. The two captains, Steve Smith, and Rohit Sharma received the Test cap from their respective Prime Ministers, PM Albanese and PM Modi, before the toss.
While batting first, the Kangaroos scored 480 runs in 167 overs before getting bundled out. The top scorer from their side was left-hand opener Usman Khawaja, who scored 180 runs in 422 balls he faced in his innings which included 21 boundaries.
Ravichandran Ashwin returned with six wickets
With this innings, he became the first Australian batter to play the longest Test innings in terms of balls. He surpassed the former Aussie batter Graham Yallop who played almost 400 balls in the Kolkata Test against India back in 1979. Star Australian all-rounder Cameron Green also went on to score his maiden century of his Test career. He scored 114 runs off 170, which included 18 boundaries. He built a 208-run partnership with Khawaja for the fifth wicket.
For team India, the pick of the bowlers was veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who snapped six wickets in his spell of 47.2 overs. He conceded only 91 runs in his spell and bowled 15 maiden overs. Shami grabbed two wickets and one wicket each was snapped by the left-arm spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.
India, while batting on the second day, played 10 overs and scored 36 runs. Skipper Rohit Sharma is batting on 17 runs from 33 balls with two boundaries and Shubman Gill is playing on 18 runs from 27 balls which includes one four and one six each.
Here’s how fans reacted to Usman Khawaja’s brilliant century:
