‘Bacho abbu aa rahe hai’ – Fans react as India qualify for World Test Championship final for second consecutive time
India won the four-match Border-Gavaskar Test series 2-1 against Australia on Monday, March 13 after the fourth Test at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad ended in a draw. Former Indian skipper, Virat Kohli was awarded Player of the Match for his brilliant innings of 186 runs and the spinning duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were awarded Player of the Series for their brilliant performances with the ball throughout the series. Ashwin grabbed 25 wickets, whereas Jadeja snapped 22 wickets.
Earlier in the day, the former New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson slammed the 28th Test century of his international career. He scored an unbeaten knock of 121 runs off 194 balls, which included 11 boundaries and a six. That knock helped Blackcaps to victory by two wickets in a thrilling last-ball finish in Christchurch.
With this loss, Sri Lanka’s hopes of reaching the finals of the World Test Championship ended and India got qualified. The final will be played at The Oval, Southampton from June 7 to June 11, just after the completion of the Indian T20 League.
I could play the way I wanted to play: Virat Kohli
If we talk about India’s victory over the Kangaroos, this is the fourth consecutive series win for the hosts. On the last four occasions, the series has finished with the same scoreline, which is 2-1. This series also marks the end of the four-match cycle in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. From next time, either three or five matches will be played in the series, but the number of the matches has not been confirmed yet.
“To be honest, the expectations I have from myself as a player is more to important to me. I felt I was batting well from the first innings at Nagpur. We focused on batting for long. I did that to an extent but not to the capability that I have done in the past. Was a little disappointed for that. Relief from the point of view that I could play the way I wanted to play. I was happy with my defence. I am not in a space now where I will go out and prove someone wrong. I also need to justify why I am there on the field. When I was 60 not out, we decided to play positively. But we lost Shreyas to injury and were a batter short. So, we decided to play time. They were good with the ball and placed some good fields. We got a bit of a lead and gave ourselves some sort of a chance,” Kohli said in the post match presentation.
Here’s how fans reacted to India’s qualification for World Test Championship finals:
