Star Australian batter Steve Smith is set to make his Indian T20 League (ITL) appearance after a gap of two years, but this time not as a player but as a commentator in the upcoming edition of the cash-rich league which is scheduled to kick off on Friday, March 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
Smith last played ITL for the Delhi franchise in 2021. He participated in the league for a total of four different franchises. Smith made his debut in 2012 for the Pune franchise, and two years later, he was signed by the Rajasthan Royals, where he played in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Then he moved his base to the second Pune franchise, where he led the team to the final in 2017 after which the franchise was suspended from the tournament. He went back to Rajasthan in 2019 and it was revealed that 2020 will be his year as a skipper.
The 33-year-old has played a total of 103 matches in the Indian T20 League so far in which the right-hand batter has scored 2485 runs with one century. On Monday, March 27, Smith confirmed on his social media handle that he is returning to the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League in a new role.
“Namaste India. I have got some exciting news for you. I am joining ITL 2023. I am joining an exceptional and passionate team in India,” he was quoted as saying in a video posted on Twitter.
