Ravi Shastri gives some wise words of advice to Rohit Sharma amidst his poor form in IPL 2023

Rohit Sharma has not had the best of seasons with the bat in IPL 2023. In 10 matches, the Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper has only managed to score 184 runs at a meagre average of 18.40 and a strike rate of 126.89. The five-time winning IPL captain has not found it easy this season. MI were dealt with injury blows before the tournament in the form of Jasprit Bumrah and Jhye Richardson. Jofra Archer also was not fully fit at the start of IPL 2023.

Ravi Shastri had some pearls of wisdom that he wanted to impart to Rohit ahead of the clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Shastri shed light on Rohit and said it would have been an easier job for him to lead the side if he had runs under his belt. The former India coach said that Rohit would have been a different person if he had been in good form. MI have had an up-and-down season in IPL 2023 so far. They have not been consistent.

When you are not scoring runs, you can go flat – Ravi Shastri on Rohit Sharma

“As a captain, more important is that your performances come into play. If you start getting on a purple patch where you are scoring runs, the job as a captain becomes much easier. The body language on the field changes, that energy on the field is different. It’s totally different. As opposed to when you not getting runs, you can go flat – no matter who you are,” Ravi Shastri said on EspnCricinfo.

The former cricketer said Rohit is not the only one to factor in when one can think of MI’s season this year. He went on to say that MI does not have the same team and players as before. One also has to factor the injuries to key players of the MI bowling unit into account. He said that this MI team could become bigger and stronger in two years’ time. He also said that Rohit’s workload as the skipper of MI has increased manifold.

“Plus, the resources you had 2-3 years ago, aren’t quite the same, then comes the challenge, how do you get going? How do you motivate that bunch? How do you create a combination?  So the challenges as a captain might have doubled for him. The work as a captain would have doubled as opposed to two years ago,” Shastri added.
