‘Aap joh bol rahe hai voh practical nahi hai’ – Fans react as Aakash Chopra suggests new logical rules for upcoming editions of IPL
As many as six teams will compete for the remaining three slots in the playoffs of the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on the final weekend of the league round, as only the defending champions, Gujarat Titans (GT) have so far confirmed their position.
All of the teams in the playoff race – Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and Mumbai Indians (MI) – play their games this weekend. The three remaining teams are Delhi Capitals (DC), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) who have got eliminated from this edition’s cash-rich league.
The IPL 2023 saw various rule tweaks that had a favorable impact on the competition. The Impact Player rule has completely changed the competition, requiring much more strategic discussion and pivotal decision-making. In addition, players are now permitted to challenge wide-ball and no-ball decisions made by the on-field umpire.
Bonus point is a tangible reward for playing significantly better: Aakash Chopra
However, there are still opportunities to enhance and even modify IPL standards and regulations. Aakash Chopra, a former India player, and current pundit, has recommended that the IPL add two new regulations that might make the game even more intense.
In a tweet, the well-known analyst made two good comments. The fact that the IPL‘s final league matches now take place at various times offers an unfair advantage to the side playing the last game since they can then fully analyse the situation and perform accordingly.
Chopra argued that in order to remove this unfair advantage, the last leg matches should be played simultaneously. He also recommended awarding bonus points to teams that win by a wide margin or with plenty of innings remaining.
“There are two changes that I’d propose for next season’s IPL,
1. Introduction of the Bonus Points for winning a game with a huge margin. NRR is absolute but over 14 games is a tough math to understand. Bonus point is a tangible reward for playing significantly better. And also, keeps the interest alive for longer.
2. Provision of starting the games in the final leg at the same time. Today, LSG has the advantage of knowing the exact math to go over CSK on NRR…because CSK plays first. Same for tomorrow depending on today’s results. Thoughts welcome,” Chopra tweeted.
Here’s how fans reacted on Aakash Chopra’s suggestions for the upcoming Indian Premier League:
The timing idea is a good one but points should stay the same. By this logic a 100m 6 could be considered 8 runs also.
One thing I noticed is the boundaries are way to small. They must at least be 70-75m min. Currently ropes are pulled in quite a lot. I have seen 56m 6s 🤯— Mohit Oza (@mohit_oza) May 20, 2023
What about bowlers getting a reward for bowling 3 consecutive dot balls??Maybe he can decide which batter to bowl to,or minus some runs, something for the bowlers to strategise and make it exciting for them!

They should think about changing the Playoffs Format. The number of qualifying teams should increase to 6. Look at this season. Many teams can finish on the same no. of points and some of them deserve to qualify for playoffs.

Changes that are needed to render T20s competitive and fair
1. Abolish the penalty of free hit after a no ball; don’t punish a bowler twice
2. Allow bowlers to bowl two bouncers
3. Scrap powerplay
4. Scrap substitution
5. Get rid of the strategic break
6. Keep boundary side 75m.— Gowhar Geelani (@GowharGeelani) May 20, 2023
The first point you made is very valid and will add more spike to the game. However the second one, though legitimate, may not work out because of commercial interests especially from the broadcasting and viewership aspect. Your thoughts pl Aakash ji?

1. Other than the fans and cringeworthy ads and 🤑 , NRR is what makes IPL more interesting than other leagues.
2. Will @BCCI gift a TV for fans to watch 2 matches at the same time. Some of us are fan of IPL and cricket in general.
The only change in next year IPL should be -…— g0vind (@faoi_thuairim) May 20, 2023
2nd point is easily the one to bring in from next season itself sir. Not saying just because being a CSK fan. Even if CSK had got such adv, it will be bad only. It shouldnt favour one side like this at the end phase when every team has a chance for a playoff chance.

Totally in agreement with you on the second point. But introduction of bonus point may enable teams with lesser number of wins to qualify for the playoffs.

Wonderful suggestions @cricketaakash.
The last match for each team should be played simultaneously. That would mean 5 matches being played at the same time (maybe a bit of revenue loss on TV advt), and no team getting an advantage. Similar to how FIFA World Cup last group…— Devroop Dhar (@DevroopD) May 20, 2023
1. remove impact player rule. If continued, we might not see all rounders after few years.
2. Measure waist height and player height to intersect these with ball tracking to maintain consistency.
3. Penalize batting team everytime non-striker leaves crease before ball is…— Trilok Reddy (@3lok_cricketfan) May 20, 2023
