‘This isn’t ideal for the conversation of how I see….’ – Dean Elgar on decline of Test cricket in South Africa
South Africa’s star cricketer, Dean Elgar, takes a dig at Cricket South Africa (CSA) ahead of the Test series against New Zealand. Notably, CSA has announced the squad for the two Test matches against New Zealand; however, they have named seven uncapped players out of the 14 members of the Test squad as their best players set to play in the SA20 League in February.
However, Dean Elgar feels Test Cricket holds a great future as compared to the shortest format of the game. The legendary cricketer feels the squad is not ideal for the New Zealand Test series owing to a bunch of young players in the team.
“I still think Test cricket will have a future and in speaking to the younger guys in the dressing room, they still live for the format. The situation we’ve been put in from a cricketing fraternity perspective isn’t ideal and maybe the team that’s selected to go to New Zealand isn’t ideal for the conversation of how I see Test cricket. It must be seen in that light as we can’t control what happens behind the scenes. Is out of the players, coaches and team management’s hands,” Dean Elgar said on Tuesday during his last pre-match conference.
It was a couple of months back that I decided for this to be my last series: Dean Elgar
Meanwhile, the 36-year-old cricketer is playing his last Test game against India and has recently spoken about his emotions for his farewell Test. The left-handed batter revealed that he had made that decision a couple of months ago to get his retirement from the red ball of the game. Moreover, the southpaw revealed that he will always remain a Test fanatic.
“I made my decision long ago. It was a couple of months back that I decided for this to be my last series. Regardless of what happened behind the scenes, I had already made my bed and I’m sleeping in it quite nicely. As long as I am around, I will remain a Test fanatic,” he added further.
