India bundled out Australia for 177 on Day 1 of the first Test at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday, February 9. The visitors who have won the toss and opted to bat first couldn’t help themselves in front of Indian bowlers in their first innings.

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja made a phenomenal comeback from injury with a five-wicket haul. Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin’s three-wicket haul helped him to reach the milestone of 450 career wickets. Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami also picked one wicket each.

After the dismissal of their openers Australia somehow managed to get on track with an 82-run stand between Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith who came as no. 3 and 4 respectively. Labuschagne who was Australia’s top-scorer in the innings (133-ball 49) was stumped by debutant wicketkeeper KS Bharat in the seventh over which was Jadeja’s first wicket. Post-match of Day 1, the Aussie batter revealed his friendly banter with former India captain Virat Kohli. He said that there are some shots he played that were learned from India’s star batsman.

“Yeah, it’s always nice when Virat thinks you have played a decent shot there. There are a few shots I definitely learned from him,” Labuschagne was quoted as saying in an interview on Sen Cricket.

“We are here to win the series, so we are going to make sure that we work as hard as we possibly can and fight our way back into the match by putting up a special performance with the bat… Just what I thought he was going to do. His temperament as a person gave me a lot of confidence coming into this game. His skills are high, he’s got the changes and angles. He has got the craft. He looks like a special talent and it’s nice to see him do well,” he added.

India in their first innings reached 77 for 1 at stumps on Day 1 of the opening Test. Captain Rohit Sharma’s half-century (69 not out) and KL Rahul (20) put up a 76-run opening stand. However Australia managed to pick one wicket with debutant Todd Murphy dismissing Rahul as the Indian opener became his first international wicket.
