‘He falls into that category’ – Ex-India opener compares Shubman Gill with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli following his T20I ton
With his magnificent ton against New Zealand on Wednesday, Indian opener Shubman Gill has shut the mouths of critics. In the third and final T20I of the ongoing India-New Zealand series, Gill hammered clueless Kiwis around the park in Ahmedabad. Gill, in his record-breaking innings, scored 125 runs off 63 balls, including 12 fours and seven sixes.
Now, former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer has praised Gill and compared him with the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Jaffer believes that Gill has answered all questions arising over his batting abilities in the shortest format of the game. “Shubman Gill beat New Zealand by 60 runs himself. He has come of age, surely, the way he has batted in the last couple of months in Tests and ODIs. The T20 format was the only question mark over his ability and his strike rate.”
Jaffer also feels that Gill is an all-format player. “There was no denying that he had kind of conquered Test cricket a little bit. In one-day cricket, he has made a spot of his own. In the T20s, there were question marks about his hitting ability. It just goes on to show how mature he has become throughout a couple of months”, Jaffer added while speaking with ESPNcricinfo.
“He is similar to Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli”, Says Wasim Jaffer
Cricketer turned Commentator Wasim Jaffer further praised Gill’s hitting abilities. Comparing him with Virat and Rohit, Jaffer said, “It’s a very impressive sign. The way he bats, you kind of feel that he has got that game. It’s up to him when he needs to take it out, similar to Rohit Sharma or Kohli. They know when to pull out certain shots and Gill falls into that category. He can switch gears when he wants to.”
With the help of Gill’s magnificent century, India posted 234/4 after opting to bat first. Young batter Rahul Tripathi also played a vital knock of 44 runs off 22 balls. While chasing the mountainous total, Kiwis failed to make any partnerships and were losing wickets at regular intervals. Captain Hardik Pandya shined with the ball for India. He took 4 wickets off 16 runs to bundle up New Zealand for 66 runs in 12.1 overs.
