‘Rohit Sharma has a pedigree of leadership success…’ – Ian Chappell lauds India’s captain leadership in India vs England Test series
Former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell has heaped praise on India’s captain Rohit Sharma’s leadership in the ongoing five-match Test series. Notably, the Men in Blue are leading the series by 2-1 and will be looking to win the fourth Test match in Ranchi to win the series against a strong England side.
However, Ian Chappell feels that Rohit Sharma made a great comeback in the series after losing the first Test. They went on to win the second and third Tests at Vizag and Rajkot, respectively. The 80-year-old cricketer feels that Rohit Sharma has a pedigree of leadership, and his skills have taken Indian cricket to the epitome of the level that helps him win matches.
“His capable handling of the many changes to personnel and the tough loss of the first Test shows his resilience. He also produced a masterful century when the Indian team needed it, at the start of the third Test, to confirm he wasn’t a ceremonial captain. Rohit has a pedigree of leadership success and his reputation helped him guide a fluid Indian line-up in the right direction,” Ian Chappell said on ESPNCricinfo.
Any failure in Rohit Sharma’s leadership could easily have led this Indian team to faltering: Ian Chappell
Ian Chappell feels that any problem in Rohit Sharma’s leadership would not have allowed them to win the Test matches. Moreover, the legendary cricketer also talks about how Rohit Sharma helps players like Jasprit Bumrah and Yashasvi Jaiswal become the stars of the game. Furthermore, the former top-order batter says that Rohit Sharma’s tactical skills and pragmatic approach are the main reasons for India’s success.
“Any failure in his leadership could easily have led this Indian team to faltering when the going got tough. There is no doubt the elite skill of Bumrah and the talent of Yashasvi Jaiswal and the other inexperienced players India introduced to the team is helpful. However, it required the leadership guidance and the tactical nous of Rohit to ensure that a changing team retained belief in their cricket,” he added further.
