India Captain Rohit Sharma reacts to the religious comments made on Mohammed Shami during 4th Test against Australia
The fourth and final Test match between India and Australia resulted in a dull draw as the flat track didn’t provide any help for bowlers. Even on the fifth day, the pitch didn’t help the spinners, and any slim chance of a victory vanished when the India bowlers failed to pick early wickets on Day 5. Meanwhile, a very sick moment was captured on camera when some spectators chanted religious comments on Mohammed Shami.
The Star Indian pacer faced trolls while he was fielding near boundary ropes. Some people chanted ‘Jai Shree Ram’ and other religious comments on Shami. They tried to indulge with him over his religion. Despite this, the senior pacer didn’t react to it. Later, at the post-match press conference, India skipper Rohit Sharma was questioned about the incident.
The India skipper asserted that he was not aware of any such event involving the fast bowler during the game. Rohit said,
“Jai Shri Ram chants for Shami are completely unknown to me. It’s something I just, recently, heard. What has occurred there is unknown to me.”
Notably, this is not the first time when Shami has been subjected to this kind of trolling for his religion. After India’s defeat by Pakistan in 2021 20-20 World Cup, he received abuse on social media.
India’s plans for the Test Championship:
After winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 by 2-1, India are now set to play the second consecutive final of the World Test Championship. They will face Australia in the final, which is scheduled to take place in June at The Oval in London.
In the previous cycle, India lost the final to Kane Williamson-led New Zealand. Although, captain Rohit Sharma revealed his plans for the most important game, which is scheduled just after the Indian T20 League 2023.
The finals of the Indian T20 league is scheduled for May 28. Thus, it will be a very short turnaround before the players appear in the Test championship final. The Indian captain revealed that players whose teams will be eliminated by 21st May will be, immediately, sent to the UK.
“I don’t believe it will be a major issue, but I do believe in preparation, and preparation will be crucial for us in the finals. Around the 21st of May, six teams will be potentially out of playoff contentions, so whichever players are available, we will try to find time to get them to the UK as soon as possible and get some time, and we will monitor as much as possible”, said Rohit.
