‘Jungle me aaya naya sher’ – Fans ecstatic as Shubman Gill scores magnificent double-century against New Zealand in 1st ODI
India and New Zealand squared off in the opening ODI of the three-match series at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday. On Saturday, January 21, the second One-Day International of the series will be contested at Raipur’s Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium. On Tuesday, January 24, at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, the third and final game of the series will take place.
Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Men in Blue, chose to bat first after winning the toss. Before the captain of Team India was dismissed on the first delivery of the 13th over by Kiwis right-arm seamer Blair Tickner, the opening pair of Rohit and Shubman Gill had amassed a partnership of 60 runs. The 35-year-old hit 34 runs off 38 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes, before returning to the stands.
Shubman Gill – Youngest to score a double hundred in ODIs
After the captain of the Mumbai franchise was dismissed, Virat Kohli, the former skipper of India, entered the field of play. But because he left early, he was unable to leave the mark this time. He only managed to score 8 runs off of 10 balls, including a boundary.
The Gujarat franchise opener scored his maiden double-hundred of his international career. He is the fifth Indian to score a double hundred in One-Day Internationals after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit and Ishan Kishan.
He became the youngest to score a double century and also became the fastest player to reach 1000 ODI runs. He scored 208 runs off 149 balls which included 19 fours and 9 sixes at a strike rate of around 140.
In the recently finished series between India and Sri Lanka, Shubman Gill hit a hundred in the third one-day match. However, Gill helped the Men in Blue in Thiruvananthapuram set a challenging 391-run goal for the Lankan Lions on January 15 by scoring 116 runs off 97 balls.
