Rain forced the cancellation of the opening match of three one-day international matches between Bangladesh and Ireland, ensuring South Africa’s participation at this year’s Cricket World Cup. To compete against the Proteas for the final automatic World Cup qualifying spot through the ODI Super League, Ireland is required to win all three of the series games.

Rain prevented the Irish from responding to Bangladesh’s 246/9 on Tuesday, so they will now have to compete in final qualification in June and July. Essex’s County Ground in Chelmsford, which is the venue of English county team Essex, was playing in the rain at around 4.45 p.m. local time with Ireland 65/3 after 16.3 overs.

After Bangladesh was given the opportunity to bat by Ireland on what appeared to be favourable batting conditions, Mushfiqur Rahim led the way with 61 off 70 balls to earn his 44th ODI half-century. Josh Little had the best bowling statistics for Bangladesh with a 3-61, as Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 44 while Towhid Hridoy scored 27 off 31 balls.

In their response, Ireland started off to a shaky start, losing skipper Andy Balbirnie, who was dismissed for 5 and Paul Stirling notched up a score of 15 and both of them were eliminated in the span of 10 balls before the conclusion of the fifth over. By the moment the covers were put on, Harry Tector, who had a score of 21, was joined in the centre by Lorcan Tucker, who had a score of 2. Ireland had to bat for at least 20 overs to get a result but that wasn’t the case in this match.

Bangladesh already had a spot reserved for them in the automatic qualifying round for the upcoming Cricket World Cup in India in October and November. The top eight participants in the three-year-old World Cup Super League competition receive the first slots for the 10-team World Cup. England, the defending champion, along with other elite countries including India, New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan have already secured their spots.
