‘That’s the issue when you buy Cameron Green……’ – Mike Hesson analyzes IPL 2024 auction strategy shifts

Former Royal Challengers Bangalore director Mike Hesson has said that Cameron Green’s purchase in the IPL 2024 auction has disturbed their auction strategy. Notably, Australian star all-rounder Cameron Green was picked up by the Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2023. However, he was traded to RCB ahead of the IPL 2024 for a whopping amount of 17.5 crore.

However, Mike Hesson says that they have bullied other teams in the IPL auction. The 49-year-old cricketer feels that the RCB were in a strong position after releasing a few players ahead of the IPL 2024, but Cameron Green’s purchase has disrupted their few strategies, which makes a great difference.

“We’ve been in auctions where we have bullied other teams. We were able to get ourselves into that position by releasing players. But I thought after the retention list, RCB were in a really strong position. And then they spent ₹17 crore on Cam Green. Cam Green is a fine player, but his buy made a huge difference to their auction strategy,” Mike Hesson said.

Mike Hesson also feels that he would never bid any players up to Rs 20.5 crore. However, the New Zealand coach accepted that RCB was left with no money, as they had purchased Cameron Green for such a massive amount, for which they were unable to bid for other players for such a massive amount.

“I never would have bid for Pat Cummins to that level (INR 20.25 crore). Never. You basically show your hand that that’s as far as you can go. So you have another two or three teams that know that ‘that’s all that RCB has ‘. The other teams will then forego a lot of other options to save more than 23 crore in order to outbid RCB. So I think RCB showed their hands probably too much with the Pat Cummins move. But I can understand why they did it. That’s the issue when you buy Cameron Green for ₹17 crore,” he added further.
