Mohammed Shami set to miss first 2 Tests vs England, Suryakumar Yadav to undergo operation for hernia

The Indian Cricket Board has announced the squad for the T20I series against Afghanistan, which is slated to take place on January 11. However, the series marked the notable omission of Suryakumar Yadav and Mohammed Shami, as they both sustained injuries. Notably, Shami hasn’t played a single game since the 2023 ODI World Cup. Meanwhile, star batter Suryakumar Yadav sustained injuries during the third T20I series against South Africa in Boland Park in Paarl.

However, the Indian Cricket Board has shared fresh updates on their injury. The officials revealed that the 33-year-old star bowler is set to miss the first two Test matches against England due to his grave injuries. In addition, the board says that the GT bowler hasn’t even started bowling practice at NCA to prove his fitness.

“Mohammed Shami hasn’t even started to bowl, he will have to go to NCA and prove his fitness. He looks doubtful for the first two Tests against England,” a source in the Indian Cricket Board said.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav has been diagnosed with a hernia, and he is set to undergo the operation. In addition, the stylish right-handed batter is set to be out of the game for a few weeks and might miss a few games of the IPL as well. The middle-order batter is set to be the most important player for the T20 World Cup in 2024.

Suryakumar Yadav is crucial to India’s chances in the T20 World Cup 2023: Indian Cricket Board

“Whereas in Yadav’s case, he will take more time than expected. SKY was recently diagnosed with sports hernia. He is currently recuperating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In two-three days, he will fly for Munich, Germany, to get operated for it. It means that he certainly won’t be playing for Mumbai this season in the Ranji Trophy and is likely to miss the initial games for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL,” a source in the Indian Cricket Board told this paper.

“With the T20 World Cup in June, Surya will be given all the time to recover properly. He is crucial to India’s chances in the T20 World Cup 2024,” the source added further.
