MS Dhoni files Contempt of Court case against IPS officer
Former India skipper MS Dhoni has filed a contempt of court case against an IPS officer from Tamil Nadu, Sampath Kumar. Apparently, since December 2021, the latter has been accused of breaching the gag order on the 2013 spot-fixing and betting scandal. For the unversed, the likes of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals got into spot-fixing scandal. Three players from the Royals and then team principal were arrested for the offense.
The three players and the team principal were banned for life. However, there was another controversy around the list of players not being made public by the Supreme Court of India. It is understood that the names came during the investigation and they reportedly have nothing to do with the entire scandal. Over the years, Kumar has always challenged this decision.
Fed up with this, SC decided to put an embargo on Kumar for not speaking on this matter publicly. However, in late 2021, the former CID officer broke the order and was booked for contempt of court by Dhoni. In the recent proceedings, Dhoni said “He (Sampath Kumar) has stated that the Supreme Court deviated its focus on the rule of law and shelved the deposition of the Justice Mudgal Committee (constituted to probe 2013 match-fixing allegations) and kept it in a sealed cover for reasons he failed to comprehend.”
This apart, the officer had also maligned, disrespected, and scandalized the Madras High Court and made false allegations against designated senior counsels of the court including the office of the advocate general of Tamil Nadu, Dhoni said.
Allowing the plea, the bench found Sampath Kumar guilty of the offense of contempt of court.
