WATCH: Rohit Sharma’s reaction after Jay Shah confirms he will lead India in T20 World Cup 2024 goes viral

The captain of the Indian team at the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA-West Indies will be Rohit Sharma, not Hardik Pandya. Notably, Indian Cricket Board Secretary Jay Shah revealed on Wednesday, at a speech commemorating the renaming of the Saurashtra Cricket Association facility to the Niranjan Shah facility in Rajkot, that  Rohit Sharma is set to lead the side in the upcoming marquee event. However, Jay Shah addressed the statement in the presence of head coach Rahul Dravid and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Jay Shah revealed that Rohit Sharma was leading in the past, and after his successful comeback in the Afghanistan series, he is set to take charge. However, the cricket administrator is confident about winning the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.

“Rohit was captaining (in the past and in other formats) and he came back for the Afghanistan series after a year, which means we were going to let him continue forward. Main aap ko promise karna chahta hoon ki Rohit Sharma ki kaptani mein 2024 mein Barbados mein hum jarur Bharat ka jhanda gadenge (I want to promise you that we’ll lift the trophy in Barbados at the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy),” Jay Shah said.

Rohit Sharma has the ability, as I said, we won ten games in the ODI World Cup: Jay Shah

Meanwhile, Jay Shah confirmed that Hardik Pandya would be Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the coming event. The cricket administrator also explains why Rohit Sharma is his first choice over great all-rounder Hardik Pandya as the captain for the upcoming marquee event.

Hardik Pandya will definitely be the vice-captain. When Hardik was injured in the World Cup, who else can we give the captaincy? In the third T20I against Afghanistan, India were 22/4 and the way Rohit Sharma took the team to 212/4, we can’t question much about him, right? He has the ability, as I said, we won ten games in the ODI World Cup. We didn’t win the final, but it’s part and parcel of the game. Whoever plays better, wins,” he added further.
