Reports: Shreyas Iyer no longer in India’s scheme of things in Test cricket

India’s star cricketer, Shreyas Iyer, has been excluded from the Indian Test side for the first time in two years after a lacklustre performance in his last four Test matches against South Africa and England. Notably, despite a prolonged struggle to score runs since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home last year, he had received continued support from the team management and captain Rohit Sharma.

Nevertheless, it appears that the management’s tolerance has diminished, leading to Shreyas Iyer being dropped from the upcoming 5-match Test series. Meanwhile, after India’s recent 106-run victory over England in the second Test, Shreyas Iyer engaged in a lengthy discussion with head coach Rahul Dravid in the dressing room at the ACA-VDCA stadium in Vizag.

However, fans on social media and various sources speculated that the extended conversation between Rahul Dravid and Shreyas Iyer signaled a message from Dravid regarding Iyer’s precarious position on the Test side due to recent performance issues. Meanwhile, some believed it was a discussion about batting technique and overcoming the lean patch that has seen Iyer struggle to reach the 40-run mark in his last 12 Test innings.

Shreyas Iyer has been omitted from the squad for the last three Tests against England

However, with the recent announcement of the Indian squad for the remaining Test series against England by the Indian Cricket Board, it seems the rumours align more with the notion that Rahul Dravid conveyed to Iyer that another extended opportunity might not be granted, especially considering Iyer’s recent dismissals to spinners in the innings played in Hyderabad and Vizag.

Meanwhile, following a series of low scores, Shreyas Iyer has been omitted from the squad for the last three Tests against England. Although Iyer reported back spasms after the second Test, an ESPNCricinfo report clarified that the issue wasn’t severe enough to sideline him for the upcoming matches in Rajkot, Ranchi, and Dharamsala. Meanwhile, despite his availability, the selectors opted to explore alternative options, considering Iyer’s extended period of batting struggles.
