Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan pick India’s breakout performer of the year

Former India cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan picked the breakout performer of the year from the men’s cricket team in 2023. Notably, the legendary cricketers have named India’s young batter Shubman Gill as the standout performer of 2023. The 24-year-old batter had a great year in 2023, where he was the leading run-scorer in IPL 2023. In addition, Gill played a crucial role in the ODI World Cup 2023 as well, helping India reach the finals.

Sunil Gavaskar feels Gill had great form the whole year in all three formats. In addition, the former India skipper claimed that Gill failed to show his form in the ongoing Test series, which lost them the crucial game in Centurion.

“Breakout performer, I would imagine would be Shubman Gill for the way he batted throughout the 2023 season in all formats of the game. Test cricket, at the start, he was unstoppable. Towards the end, he tapered off in Test cricket but the ODI and T20 performances were exceptional. So he would be the breakout performer as far as the men’s team is concerned,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Meanwhile, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan feels this was the year of the young boy. In addition, the well-renowned cricket commentator feels the top-order batter has struck magnificent centuries and says he will have a bright future as an Indian cricketer.

“Shubman Gill, especially in ODI cricket. The way this year was for a young boy in ODI cricket, who is probably the future of the Indian team. I feel he has a huge leadership future as well. Considering that, Shubman Gill’s year was a huge positive. It was a breakout year for Shubman Gill because he struck a sequence of centuries, his average was amazing and it seems like ODI cricket perfectly suits him.
