‘They might not have as much money….’ – Sunil Gavaskar slams Cricket South Africa for rain-disrupted 1st T20I

Team India’s first game of the T20I series against South Africa was washed out on December 10 in Durban after rain stopped the play. However, former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has lashed out at the Cricket South Africa Board for not managing the cricket field properly, which led to the cancellation of the game on Sunday.

The legendary cricketer was furious about the grounds not being covered after the rain stopped. In addition, the well-renowned cricket commentator feels CSA should have managed things properly, as all the cricket boards are getting enough money to manage them. However, the former batting legend took a dig at CSA while calling them a poor board.

“If the ground remains uncovered and the rain stops, you know it doesn’t start for another one hour. Suddenly it rains again. So there’s no play whatsoever. Everybody (cricket boards) is getting a lot of money. Let’s make no mistake. All the cricket boards have got plenty of money. If they say they don’t, they are lying. They might not have as much money as the BCCI. Fair enough. But every board has got money to buy these covers to cover the entire ground,” Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports.

South Africa, I remember that they wanted to play against some team and the match didn’t take place: Sunil Gavaskar

The former India skipper also cites the example of the English cricket team and the reason why not many world matches took place in English countries. However, the 74-year-old cricketer feels the board should have covered the grounds after the rain stopped the play to prevent further wet outfield.

“So many World Cup matches in England did not take place because the ground was not covered. The rain had stopped, but the rest of the ground was, you know, wet. So a lot of teams lost points. South Africa, I remember that they wanted to play against some team and the match didn’t take place or something had happened, mainly because the outfield was wet,” he added further.
