Cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar weighs in on India’s probable opening combo for South Africa series

Suryakumar Yadav led-Team India will be facing hosts South Africa on December 12 for the second T20I game. Notably, the first game between both teams was washed out after rain halted the game on December 10 in Durban. However, the Men in Blue showed magnificent performances in the recently concluded T20I series against the new ODI World Cup 2023 champions and won the series by 4-1 owing to their fantastic performances in batting and bowling that completely destroyed Australia.

However, former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has opened up about Team India’s opening combination for the South Africa series, as they have now three in-form openers, namely Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, for the South Africa series. Notably, star batter Shubman Gill, who was part of the ODI World Cup 2023, rested for the T20I series against Australia after the marquee event. However, great openers and IPL stars Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the series against Australia and gave a great start to the hosts, which helped seal the series.

Meanwhile, great analyst Sunil Gavaskar also talks about the left- and right-handed combinations in the squad, as Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the great openers for the series. However, the well-known cricket commentator has also spoken up about skipper Rohit Sharma’s future in T20Is, and if he is available, then Team India sets to have four opening batters for the T20 World Cup 2024 slated to take place in month of May and June.

For this series, Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Yashasvi Jaiswal is also there: Sunil Gavaskar

“For this series, Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Yashasvi Jaiswal is also there. He has also done well. If the team wants a left-hand, right-hand combination then Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

“It’s a very good problem to have. Also, there is Rohit Sharma, who is waiting, whether he is going to be available for the T20 World Cup that remains to be seen,” he added further.
