‘He is absolutely right in saying the ones….’ – Sunil Gavaskar opens up on Rohit Sharma’s ‘you need that hunger’ comment

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has recently opened up about Rohit Sharma’s comment about the need for hunger in players to play Test cricket. Notably, Team India won the fourth Test match against England and went on to win the series by 3-1 in the Ranchi Test. Rohit Sharma and Co. will be next seen in action on March 7, where they will be facing the visiting sides for the last and final Test game.

However, Rohit Sharma has spoken up about his team’s performance after the side won by five wickets in Ranchi. The 36-year-old skipper says that Test cricket is the toughest format to play, and if one needs to succeed in this format, then one must be hungry and have a lot of passion to play the Test game. In addition, the opening batter clarified that he does not give chances to those players who do not possess the hunger to play the game.

“Test cricket is the toughest format. And if you want success and want to excel in this tough format then you need that hunger. It is very important. We will give opportunity only to players who have that hunger. Jinko bhookh nahi hai, unko dekh ke hi pata chal jata hai (You come to know easily the players who don’t have that hunger, or players who don’t want to stay here and play this format. We come to know that,” Rohit Sharma said during the post-match press conference.

Rohit Sharma is absolutely right in saying the ones who have the hunger: Sunil Gavaskar

Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar also came out in support of Rohit Sharma’s comment. The former India captain feels that the players who put in the most effort will only be given the opportunity.

“Rohit Sharma is absolutely right in saying the ones who have the hunger, the ones who are willing to put the effort, will be given more opportunities going ahead. If this is the attitude of the selectors then it will be good for Indian cricket. We’ve seen many players pick and choose, this shouldn’t happen,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.
