Reports: Indian Cricket Board to discuss with Rohit Sharma about his white-ball cricket future

Team India lost the ODI World Cup 2023 final to Australia by an unexpected six wickets on November 19 at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, according to reports, India team’s captain Rohit Sharma to have talks with Indian Cricket Board officials about his future in white-ball cricket.

The reports confirmed that the 36-year-old skipper is totally fine after not being considered for T20 cricket. However, the Indian Cricket Board officials are set to devote their time and resources to young IPL stars for the T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit Sharma will focus his energy on Test cricket as he sets to be part of the next WTC final.

However, there is no official news that Hardik Pandya will be the captain, for his frequent injuries. In addition, the officials confirmed that Ajinkya Rahane’s position is also not fixed for Test cricket after Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill returned to the camp. The Indian Cricket Board will look to groom the new captains for a longer format of cricket.

Rohit Sharma will be focusing a lot of his energy on the Test format: Reports

“Before the ODI World Cup, Rohit had communicated that he is fine not being considered for T20Is. The selectors have been investing heavily in youth in T20Is for the last one year. With the T20 World Cup happening in June next year, they are reluctant to deviate from that strategy. As of now, it seems Rohit will be focusing a lot of his energy on the Test format for the next cycle of World Test Championship which runs till 2025,” an Indian Cricket Board source said.

“Grooming a captain for the longer formats is a key part of the agenda. With Hardik Pandya prone to injuries, selectors may look for options in ODIs. The selection committee is very clear that it wants to groom players who will play together her for a longer period of time. With Shreyas Iyer coming back into Test reckoning and Shubman Gill batting at No. 3, there is little scope for Rahane,” the source claimed.
