‘The team to be called Bharat cricket team’ – Sunil Gavaskar’s great take on raging ‘Bharat vs India’ debate
Former India cricketer turned analyst Sunil Gavaskar has also come up with his opinion on the India vs. Bharat debate on September 6. Notably, a plethora of sports personalities and celebrities are sharing their opinions on the India vs. Bharat debate. Notably, the legendary cricketer’s remarks came after former India opener Virender Sehwag urged Jay Shah to have Bharat’s name on the upcoming Men’s ODI World Cup jersey. Notably, the ODI World Cup starts on October 5, 2023 with England and New Zealand clashing in the opener.
Sharing his insights on the ongoing India-Bharat debate, the 74-year-old cricketer admitted that Bharat is an original name, but the government and Indian Cricket Board should now call them the Bharat Cricket Team over the Indian Cricket Team. Moreover, the cricket commentator believes that there will not be much problem if the teams are called Bharat by name. Furthermore, the 1983 World Cup winner affirms that the name should be implemented everywhere from now on.
That is the original name, Bharat: Sunil Gavaskar
“That is the original name, Bharat. So it has a nice ring to it. But it has to be done at the official level, the government level and the board level for the team to be called Bharat cricket team. But changes have occurred. Burma is now called Myanmar. So the original name can come in and I do not see much of a problem. But, basically, it needs to come in everything,” Sunil Gavaskar said on India Today.
Meanwhile, just a few days ago, 2011 World Cup winner Virender Sehwag also expressed his happiness at getting the name Bharat officially back after the British named it India. Moreover, the former top-order batter feels there should be one name that makes us proud. “I have always believed a name should be one which instills pride in us. We are Bhartiya’s, India is a name given by the British and it has been long overdue to get our original name ‘Bharat’ back officially,” Virender Sehwag said.
