U19 WC winning Women’s team to get felicitated by Sachin Tendulkar at the Narendra Modi Stadium

The legendary Sachin Tendulkar and Indian Cricket Board office bearers will honour India’s winning women’s U19 squad on Wednesday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, according to the Board secretary Jay Shah. The first major Women’s U19 World Cup final saw India, captained by Shafali Varma, easily defeat England by 7 wickets to claim the trophy. This was India’s first overall women’s cricket championship in any format.

The winning India U-19 squad and support staff will receive a cash prize of INR 5 crore from the Indian board. India’s opener Shweta Sehrawat finished with 297 runs which included three half-centuries to lead the tournament in scoring. Parshavi Chopra, who took 11 wickets across six games, was India’s top wicket-taker in the tournament.

Roger Binny, the Indian Cricket Board President, and the 1983 World Cup-winning all-rounder praised the U19 girls for their “fearless cricket” during the competition in South Africa.

“I take this opportunity to congratulate the India U-19 Women’s team for their title glory at the Under-19 Women’s World Cup. The team played with a fearless approach and created history by winning the coveted trophy. This was the inaugural edition of the tournament and our team’s achievement has set a benchmark to inspire the upcoming cricketers in the country,” he asserted.

“The India U-19 Women’s team has done the entire country proud with their stupendous success at the Under-19 Women’s 20-20 World Cup. The Shafali Verma-led unit showed tremendous skill and grit to overcome the challenges and blazed their way to glory. The Indian Cricket Board has always valued age-group cricket and the title triumph is another sign that women’s cricket in India is thriving,” Jay Shah said.

“This success also highlights the depth of cricketing talent in the country and augurs well as we inch closer to the inaugural edition of the much-awaited Women’s T20 League which will further fuel interest in women’s cricket,” he added.
