Ace India pacer Mohammed Shami has been phenomenal throughout his career. He has been phenomenal with the bowl as his swing and seam have helped India to clinch crucial victories. However, in the 2019 ODI World Cup Shami played exceptionally to take India to the semifinals. His heroism helped India to earn crucial points in league games.

On this day in 2019, Shami clinched his first hat trick in the World Cup. Playing against Afghanistan at the Rose Bowl Cricket Ground in Southampton, England Shami registered the feat. He dismissed Mohammed Nabi, Aftab Alam and Mujeeb Ur Rahman to accomplish the historic feat.

After being asked to chase 225, Afghanistan scored 209 runs in 49 overs needing 16 runs off the last over. Mohammed Nabi smacked a brilliant boundary off the first ball to put pressure on India. Shami, on the other hand, did not lose his calm and made a spectacular comeback. He got rid of Nabi after bowling a dot on the second delivery, who smacked one straight down Hardik Pandya’s throat. Shami then executed two lethal yorkers on Aftab Alam and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

With his fiery spell, Shami became the fourth Indian bowler in ODI history, joining Chetan Chauhan, Kuldeep Yadav, and Kapil Dev. Later that year, Kuldeep will complete India’s fifth ODI hat-trick. He also joined Saqlain Mushtaq, Chaminda Vaas, Brett Lee, Lasith Malinga, Kemar Roach, Steven Finn, and JP Duminy as bowlers with World Cup hat-tricks.

India is set to face Afghanistan ahead of World Cup 2023

Ahead of the upcoming 50-over World Cup in India, Afghanistan is scheduled to play India in ODI and Test series. Both teams will square off after the Asia Cup 2023. Earlier, this series was planned in June but Indian Cricket Board asked the Afghanistan counterpart to reschedule it so that Indian players can rest well before upcoming tasks.

India under the leadership of Rohit Sharma is set to tour West Indies from July 12 before heading to Sri Lanka to participate in the Asia Cup 2023. After that team will face Afghanistan and Australia in limited over formats to prepare well for the ODI World Cup. India will host the ODI World Cup 2023 in October-November this year.
