‘Will keep my hands on my heart…’ – Former India batter made to ‘eat his words’ about Shubman Gill post his T20I ton
Young Indian opener Shubman Gill has slammed critics with his magnificent T20I century against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. Fans and critics were wowed by his amazing all-around hitting ability. However, former Indian batter Aakash Chopra feels that the 23-year-old opener will face trouble in T20s because of his batting skills.
While speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra admitted that he was not sure about Gill’s T20 abilities. “The first question in your mind might be whether Shubman Gill has become a T20 cricketer now. I will keep my hands on my heart and say the truth – I felt he plays Tests very well, ODI is his favorite format but I wasn’t 100 percent certain about T20s”, said Chopra.
Further speaking about Gill’s record-breaking innings, Chopra said, “I admit it, I say in front of everyone, there is nothing wrong. He has made such a big score now, it is fantastic. I eat my words, they are very, very bitter. It is the truth that it is the highest T20I score by an Indian.”
‘This can become a topic of discussion’ – Aakash Chopra on Gill’s T20 abilities
Speaking about Gill’s batting style, Chopra feels that he has a long way to go and will be in trouble for his conventional batting style. “This can become a topic of discussion sometime or other because his playing style is so proper, and proper players get stuck in T20s at times. So that can happen. I am just sitting on the fence a little bit, but for now, you did an amazing job and created a ruckus.”
Further speaking about Gill being a T20 batter Chopra said, “So has Shubman Gill become a T20 cricketer? I would say he has started to walk in that direction. The day he plays, he plays like this, he has shown that by doing it. But is the debate sealed now – I am not 100% certain whether there will be no further discussions about this.”
After failing in the last two innings, Gill smashed clueless Kiwis in the series decider. With the help of his ton India posted a huge target of 235 and bundled visitors for 66 only.
