Indian Cricket Board make Yo-Yo Test compulsory for India team selection: Reports

The Indian cricket board led by Roger Binny met on January 1, 2023, Sunday to review India’s outing in the recently concluded 20-20 World Cup 2022, which Jos Buttler-led England won post defeating Pakistan in the summit clash. Much to the surprise of the Indian fans, the board took many important decisions, including making Yo-Yo test compulsory for team selection.

To add more, the board reportedly decided to make the test mandatory for Indian T20 League franchises to manage the workload of the players, given that the 50-over World Cup will take place in India later in 2023. One of the key decisions that the board made was to shortlist 20 players for the multinational tournament and rotate them until they settle down for the same.

“Keeping in mind the Men’s FTP and preparations for Cricket’s governing body CWC 2023, the NCA will work in tandem with the Indian T20 League Franchisee to monitor the targeted Indian players participating in the Indian T20 League 2023,” the Indian cricket board said in the statement after the meeting.

Could fortunes change for India in 2023?

India tasted too many defeats than victories in 2022 and the team under the leadership of Rohit Sharma failed to qualify for the finals of the Asia Cup 2022 and the 20-20 World Cup 2022. It remains to be seen if the to-be-formed selection committee would come up with a new white ball captain, although there are reports claiming already that Hardik Pandya might be given the task to lead the team in the white-ball formats.

Some of the other decisions that the board took were regarding the selection of uncapped players, informing that the cricketer must have played a significant amount of domestic games to be considered for selection. To add more, the head of the Cricket Academy in Bangalore, VVS Laxman, is tasked to closely monitor the Indian T20 League franchisee to manage the workload of the players. Fans, on the other hand, are hoping for a turnaround post a dismal outing across all formats for the Indian team in 2022.
